Model Project for Energy-Efficient Treatment Plant
Primary objective of this project is to reduce energy consumption per cubic meter of sewage treated by integrating renewable energy sources into the East Bank WWTW. Launched in May 2024 and scheduled for a three-year implementation, this pilot project includes the installation of a 100-kW solar energy system and a feasibility study for converting biogas from sludge into energy.

Water Reuse and Sustainable Energy Production
This project seeks to transform wastewater into a resource by showcasing innovative technologies that treat wastewater effluent to standards suitable for agricultural and industrial reuse. The project, approved in June 2024, also aims at demonstrating energy efficiency in wastewater treatment through a sludge digestion pilot plant, which will convert biogas into energy.

The project offers an opportunity for research and development on scaling up effluent reuse to a full-scale plant. The project’s findings will culminate in a research paper addressing the challenges and opportunities identified during implementation.

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) gets its water from the Amatola Water Supply Scheme, which consists of six dams. Each of these dams supply raw water to four main treatment works which supply a total of approximately 800,000 people.

The Umzonyana Water Supply System collects, stores, treats and distributes potable water to East London, Mdantsane and surrounding areas. The Bridle Drift Dam supplies Umzonyana WTW with raw water via the Buffalo River Pump Station.

This Tour will highlight the operational processes undertaken at each of the three infrastructure components of the Umzonyana Water Supply Scheme, namely: Bridle Drift Dam, Buffalo River Pump Station (BRPS) and the Umzonyana Water Treatment Works.

The Mercedes Benz Plant is where the C-Class model of the vehicles is manufactured and delegates will be able to view various shops in the plant (Bodyshop, assembly, and CV) and also be taken through the process that the vehicle goes through.

To ensure the safety off all visitors on the site, the following rules and regulations must be strictly adhered to:

• No open-toed shoes are allowed in the plant (Closed, comfortable walking shoes are advised)
• No short pants are to be worn
• Cameras and video technology, including cameras integrated into cell phones, tablets or similar devices are strictly prohibited in the plant and accordingly no photography or videography are permitted on the MBSA premises.
• No weapons are allowed into the plant
