As IMESA President one of my key mandates is to motivate that ethics be made a compulsory part of the CPD cycle for registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) by requiring registered practitioners to attend an ethics presentation annually during their five-year registration cycle. My husband and two children are qualified medical doctors, and their professional lives are governed by their Hippocratic Oath. In my view, civil engineers should take a similar oath that determines the moral principles for ethical practice since their actions have a direct bearing on civilized society.

With the economy looking grim and infrastructure development being disrupted in an unprecedented manner, the unbearable truth is that Covid-19 has changed – and will forever change – the world as we know it. It’s impossible to quantify the extent of the impact it will have on the South African economy and the development of future infrastructure.
