SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING: Back to basics for the future

With all the challenges facing our industry today, whether these are economic, social, environmental or political, we need to adapt and be innovative. This starts with the local authorities, where most of us perform some function to serve our communities. It goes beyond the government corridors – it stretches into the ideas and solutions for taking municipal engineering into the future as envisaged and created by the engineers in South Africa.

Innovative Infrastructure Solutions

Engineers are continuously searching for more creative ways to design and complete infrastructure and other projects. With all the challenges facing our industry today, we need to adapt and be innovative. This starts with the local authorities, where most of us perform some function to serve our communities. Innovative infrastructure solutions goes beyond the government corridors – it stretches into the ideas and solutions for taking municipal engineering into the future as envisaged and created by the engineers in South Africa.

Conquering Municipal Challenges

The IMESA Conference & Exhibition has grown steadily over the past 83 years and has become a very important feature in the municipal engineer’s calendar. Delegates from in and around South Africa exchange knowledge and information on the latest developments and challenges in engineering making this the go-to Conference for the professional engineer. Synergy Through Engineering

The world has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with it, the IMESA Conference will be changing as well. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to our annual IMESA Conference, which will be virtual this year and will be hosted by Cape Town. Conference dates is 17-19 November 2021. One silver lining to all of the mayhem is that the Conference will now be accessible to everyone who were unable to attend the live event due to the hefty commitment that travel and time out of the office required.
This will also be our first ever joint international Conference as we partner with the International Association of Water, Environment, Energy and Society (IAWEES). We are excited to have them on board.

2022 Conference

Adapting to a Changing World

After two years of not being able to hold our traditional conference, it is a great pleasure to be able to host the 2022 IMESA Conference as an in-person event with all the facilities and services that our members have come to enjoy over the years. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed so much in so many lives worldwide that we cannot return to what we perceived as “normal”. It is crucial that we, as engineers, now adapt fast and move forward to find new sustainable and resilient ways to design and manage municipal infrastructure which is the backbone of our country.

Resilience is the future

In business today, the pandemic has underlined the importance of companies building resilience, when doing so one can focus on the ability of a system to anticipate, absorb, recover from and adapt to a wide array of systemic threats. Resilience can only be strengthened with coherent efforts, by all concerned including the development of supportive environments in all relevant sectors and between the different disciplines. This conference, as always, is an important event for all professional engineers and municipal officials who are involved in infrastructure management and service delivery.

2024 Conference

Engineering Revolutionised

Engineering has revolutionised the way we live, work, and interact with the world. From the Industrial Revolution to the present day, engineering has been at the forefront of innovation, the driving force and shaping of our future. Through advancements in technology, materials and design, engineers continue to transform ideas into reality, thereby creating solutions to often complex problems and improving efficiency in every aspect of infrastructure.
Whether it's the development of sustainable energy sources, the design of cutting-edge devices, engineering is constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible. The on-going engineering revolution continues to shape a world that is more interconnected, sustainable and technologically advanced than ever before.

2024 IMESA Conference

A huge thank you is extended to the sponsors and exhibitors who are supporting our conference this year. We would not be able to host such a big event without your contributions and we are very grateful for the relationships that we have forged with all of you. We sincerely hope that the content and opportunities here will be beneficial to your companies and the industry as a whole.

2023 IMESA Conference

At this halfway mark for my term as IMESA President, it is encouraging to see that progress has been made in the objectives I set out to achieve, although there is still a lot of work to be done. One objective was to encourage all engineering personnel working at South Africa’s 257 municipalities to join IMESA, whether registered with ECSA as Professionals or not.

2022 IMESA Conference

As my term as IMESA President rapidly comes to an end, I am reminded that one of my key mandates was to motivate for ethics to be made a compulsory part of the CPD cycle for registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), by requiring registered practitioners to attend an ethics presentation annually during their five-year registration cycle.

2019 IMESA Conference

It gives me great pleasure in welcoming you to our 83rd IMESA Conference held at Durban’s award winning International Convention Centre. I have no doubt that this year’s conference will live up to the standards and expectations of all our delegates, exhibitors and sponsors.

2018 IMESA Conference

Despite the present economic circumstances and cutbacks that companies are experiencing in the marketing field, we certainly hope that, in true IMESA fashion, our conference has not been too adversely affected and will be a success yet again.

2017 IMESA Conference

On the heels of the success of our previous conference in Gauteng in 2011, last year’s amazing conference in East London (Buffalo City), and the present economic climate and financial constraints being imposed on business, we will strive to deliver a conference in true IMESA style.
